Begin with the end in mind
Because Isildur didn’t destroy the ring, Gandalf expected there would eventually be another war with Sauron. He knew Smaug could cause great devastation, so he persuaded Thorin to retake Erebor. At that point, Gandalf had no knowledge of the ring’s whereabouts, but knew it would be a decisive factor. Much of what he orchestrated was with this outcome in mind.
In the Bible, the book of Genesis describes the creation in chapters 1 and 2, and then continues with the fall of man in chapter 3. God knew this would happen, so in the design of creation, the secret of Jesus – His one and only begotten Son – was hidden, only to be revealed at the proper time: His resurrection on Easter Sunday.
