When Gandalf suspects that Bilbo’s ring might be the One ring that Sauron forged, he checks in with Bilbo and later Frodo, to see if the ring affects either of them. He also searches and researches the archives in Minas Tirith in the hope that Isildur left records about the ring, and he eventually finds an important clue.

For us, things are often a bit more simple. In Matthew 7:15–20, Jesus warns us about false prophets, and makes it very clear that we can recognize them by their fruit. You may have had an experience where something that seemed so nice really wasn’t good at all. True intentions will eventually show.
